Federal BOP Release Paths
Sheriff Kenny Christopher heads the local office, while BOP or federal court records govern a verified federal custody path.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confines people serving federal sentences in a nationwide system. No BOP institution was found in Benton County, Tennessee. A Benton County connection can still arise after a federal prosecution or a transfer from local custody. The person’s actual institution comes from the individual federal record, not from the county’s geography.
A past BOP release date with no facility shown may document departure from BOP custody. It does not by itself end federal supervised release or rule out custody by a state, county, immigration, or other authority. A future date is projected. “In transit” describes movement within custody. Read the result legend and federal docket before choosing a conclusion.
| Federal clue | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Past release date and no BOP facility | Departure from BOP custody on the displayed date, subject to record context |
| Future release date | A projection, not a completed release |
| In transit | Custodial movement |
| Not found | No matching locator result; not proof there was no federal custody |
Confirm Federal BOP Releases
Use the official BOP inmate locator. Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known. The name route also uses age, race, and sex filters. Numbers are stronger than names, but every result should still be matched to the federal case.
- Enter the best federal identifier or exact name details.
- Compare the register number and demographic fields to the known person.
- Read location, status, and date together with the locator explanation.
- Check the federal court docket for sentence, commitment, and supervised-release terms.
- If the person was only in USMS pretrial custody, contact the holding agency or seek Marshals records.
- Use BOP FOIA for documentary detail when the locator is incomplete.
If the person’s last known custody was Benton County Jail, begin with the Benton County release-record path and obtain the receiving agency from the jail entry.
Federal BOP Locator Access
The BOP release route is systemwide. No relevant local BOP facility address was identified, and no Benton County institution or miniature local contact should be inferred. Use the official locator, the appropriate federal court clerk, and BOP’s national records procedures.

The BOP locator principally covers records from 1982 forward. Some earlier records may be absent. A person held by the U.S. Marshals before trial may never have entered BOP sentence custody, so a locator miss is not enough to reconstruct that history.

The capture documents the search interface and legend, not any individual Benton County release.
BOP Records Beyond Locator
The locator is a status tool, not the complete federal correctional file. For a dated record, use BOP Freedom of Information Act procedures and identify the former prisoner by full name, register number, date of birth, and other necessary case detail. Ask for existing release or movement records rather than a new explanation.
The federal docket supplies the legal sentence and later court action. BOP supplies prison movement and release data. U.S. Probation records and court filings may explain supervised release after confinement, although access limits can apply. Keep each date’s source label. A sentence end, prison release, and end of supervised release are separate events.
- Federal sentence
- A term imposed by a United States court.
- Supervised release
- Federal court supervision that commonly follows imprisonment.
- USMS custody
- Marshals responsibility for many federal detainees before BOP sentence placement.
- In transit
- Movement while still in federal custody.
Benton Federal Transfer Records
A person can disappear from Benton County Jail because federal custody continued elsewhere. A local 2020 news report described U.S. Marshals moving a prisoner from the Benton jail to an Obion County facility able to hold federal prisoners. The example shows why roster disappearance is not a community release, regardless of the person’s later outcome.
The durable proof is the Benton jail movement entry paired with the federal docket or responsible Marshals district. Ask for the receiving facility, agency, date, time, and booking or federal identifier. Then continue with the receiving custodian. The U.S. Marshals prisoner information explains the agency role but is not a public historical person locator.
Federal Release Date Meaning
A BOP result may show location and release date. When that date lies in the future, it is projected and can change. A past date with no current BOP facility generally indicates release from BOP custody on that date under the locator explanation. It does not settle every later legal status.
Check the judgment for the prison term and supervised-release term. Review later docket entries for revocation, modification, or another custody order. If an immigration detainer existed, BOP release might have led to ICE custody. If a state detainer existed, another sovereign may have received the person. The destination record resolves that fork.
Do not use a Tennessee FOIL result to prove federal release unless a separate state sentence is also at issue. Each correctional system maintains its own record, identifiers, and date meanings.
Federal Identity Matching
Use at least two identifiers. A register number, full name, date of birth, age, federal case number, and sentencing district can distinguish similar names. Race, age, or a photograph alone is not safe. Record only what is needed for an accurate match.
If sources conflict, give priority to the record creator for the event. The Benton County Jail documents its local departure. The federal court documents its order. BOP documents federal imprisonment and release. The Marshals Service documents its transfers. Keep the discrepancy visible and ask the responsible office for correction rather than silently selecting one date.
The bottom search can locate public leads. Final confirmation should come from the BOP locator, federal docket, or agency record tied to the right identifier.
BOP Release Record Requests
Identify the person and ask for existing records sufficient to show the BOP release date, type, institution, destination when public, and movement history. Include the register number and federal case when known. Obtain the court judgment separately because BOP did not create the sentence.
If supervised release followed prison, the docket may show its term and later action. For old or missing locator results, BOP FOIA and the sentencing court are stronger than a commercial profile. Preserve the response date and any coverage limit.
Benton Federal Pretrial Transfers
The U.S. Marshals Service manages federal prisoners from court-ordered custody through acquittal or conviction and delivery to BOP. It often uses local detention space, but it has no public historical person locator like the BOP tool. A former federal defendant who left Benton County Jail before entering a BOP sentence may require the federal docket, the responsible Marshals district, and the holding facility's movement record.
A documented Benton County example shows why this distinction matters. Radio NWTN reported in December 2020 that U.S. Marshals moved a detainee from Benton County Jail to an Obion County facility able to hold federal prisoners. The move itself was a transfer. It did not prove community release. The example should not be used to infer the status of anyone else, but it demonstrates the need to read the receiving destination.
BOP results also require care. “In transit” means movement, not release. A future date is projected. When a past release date appears with no facility, BOP explains that the person left BOP custody on that date, yet federal supervised release or custody in another system may still follow. Use the docket for the court action and BOP records for the federal prison event. Locator coverage principally reaches 1982 forward, so an older record may require a BOP request. Search by Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when known to avoid a weak name-only match.
